More than a Creative Director: Alyssa Maroney

Alyssa Maroney

After weeks of emails back and forth and peeking at the company calendar, I finally got the chance to sit down and talk with Alyssa.

As the head of the creative department, she is either developing a website, creating ads, on calls with clients, or assisting the team with their creative needs. Needless to say, she’s very busy, but I had the honor of chatting with her to learn more about her.

From a young age, Alyssa was interested in art. She initially pursued a career in Fine Arts, and during her first semester learned which direction she was heading.

“My first semester in college I took a digital design course and immediately went to my guidance counselor and told her I’m switching my major to graphic design.”

She started as a Graphic and Web Designer for the team but quickly began to take on more roles, eventually leading to her becoming our Creative Director. Although she wears several hats in this position, there are a few she likes more than others.

“I felt like I was always working on websites and started enjoying it more and more. I used to hate working with code and now I love it.”

For Alyssa, inspiration comes anywhere at any time. Whether she’s at work researching trends or out and about, she is constantly absorbing new information.

“I’ll always do research for each particular project but, in my own little world, I’ll go around and take mental pictures of different color combinations that I see. Even, just grocery shopping I’ll see a package of coffee and think ‘that’s a cool font’ and I’ll try to find something similar that I can use in my work.”

Alyssa attributes a lot of her hobbies to her role model, her dad! The moment she starts to talk about her dad she lights up and begins to speak very highly of him.

“I’ve always looked up to him, especially in regards to his work ethic,” she tells me with a smile.

As a child, she worked in her dad’s wood shop and took on a lot of his interests in technology and computers.

“I remember being about 4 or 5 years old when the internet came out and he brought it home,” she says. “I was 13 or 14 when I played around with computer code the first time.”

Alyssa’s dad has always been one of her biggest cheerleaders, always encouraging her to pursue her hobbies and interests.

As we continued our conversation, we began to talk about what it’s like to pursue a career in the digital space. In the constantly changing world of website development and graphic design, she encourages others seeking a similar career to learn and practice constantly.

“You have to keep up with technology and trends and figure things out by yourself through trial and error.”

However, her favorite part about her job is the opportunity to be creative and problem-solve.

“It’s super satisfying being able to solve an issue with web functionality-or a layout issue with design.”

Alyssa also reminds us that there is so much truth to the saying ‘You are your biggest critic’.

“I look back at old work and I am proud of it, but I always see new ways to improve and make it better. I can see how my work is constantly evolving.” she states.

Here at BBG&G Alyssa is so much more than a Creative Director. She is always looking for ways we can improve our services or do better for our clients. She’s also a great person to talk to-always popping in and checking on you. We’d be lost without her!
