Graphic Design Trends: Expert Insights from our Senior Digital Designer

Graphic design is constantly changing. It evolves as new technology and fashion enter the market. I decided to sit down with our Senior Digital Designer & Videographer, Alyssa Maroney, to get her thoughts on new trends in graphic design.

But first, a little about Alyssa. Here at BBG&G, Alyssa uses her design skills to help our clients stand out both digitally and in print. She has more than 10 years of experience with graphic design, including many web design projects, and video projects. Alyssa loves to learn and evolve her skills. She’s not afraid of diving headfirst into new technology and media and figuring out how to make it work for our clients. With a BFA in graphic design from SUNY New Paltz, she knows and loves the Hudson Valley well. Alyssa enjoys painting and interior design, but also gets her creative groove on by wielding power tools and doing woodworking projects.

Q: What do you do to stay up-to-date on the latest software, trends, etc.?

A: I used to subscribe to monthly design, web, and digital art magazines, but now I just buy one or two if I’m shopping in Barnes and Noble. These days I consume everything via social media accounts that I follow, blogs, YouTube videos/channels, and the occasional podcast. Some of my favorites are the Design Week Blog, @TheDesignTip Instagram, and the Design Matters podcast

Q: How has graphic design changed in the past year? Do you think COVID has anything to do with it?

A: Design is always evolving and cycling through phases—I don’t think COVID necessarily had an effect on the design itself but rather how designers work. More and more agencies are remote, and a lot of designers are switching back to contract or freelance gigs. In a recent survey, 72% of hiring managers are continuing or increasing their use of independent professionals, or freelancers, for various projects as a result of COVID.

Q: What do you see coming in graphic design?

A: Custom digital art and 3D design are becoming more prominent. I’m also seeing more and more animation, movement, and fluidity in design. I’ve even seen animated logos on websites. Adding animation is a great way to make your work stand out and keep people engaged.

Q: What are your favorite graphic design trends right now?

A: Futuristic design, but also retro design. I’ve seen a lot of abstract, futuristic design with very vibrant color palettes—which I think aligns well with our advancing technology and where we are in 2021. On the other hand, I’m always a sucker for retro/nostalgic design. Have you seen the “Retro Collection” of Igloo coolers? It’s like traveling back to the ’90s.

Q: What makes a successful design?

A: If you are able to accurately convey an idea, story, personality, or feeling through design, then it’s successful. Design is about problem-solving based on research and observation, not personal taste or aesthetics.

One thing became clear to me while interviewing Alyssa. In order to keep your designs fresh and engaging, you need to keep an expert in your corner. Someone who takes the time to get to know the industry, research trends, and understand how new technology helps you reach your audiences.
