Why It’s Worth Jumping on the Social Media Bandwagon

Bird Box Sweeps Twitter

By Bethany, Social Media Strategist  | January 3, 2019

As marketers we wonder, if everyone else is doing it, should we be doing it too? Trends come and go so frequently, it’s hard to tell when it’s worth jumping in.

Take, for example, the latest Netflix original movie, Bird Box. The post apocalyptic movie starring Sandra Bullock broke records, with 45 million accounts watching it on the December weekend of its release. (No shame here – I was one of them.)

Besides the fact that it was a great movie, why did it get so much attention in such short time?

One word: Twitter.

It was released the week after the holidays – the perfect time to debut a movie with an A-List star. People had the time to relax and watch this comical, yet terrifying thriller.

Because of the nature of the Netflix platform, it was easy for viewers to grab screenshots and create their own memes on Twitter – which went viral.

The popularity of the memes are most likely the result to the movie’s easy-to-follow story line. Even if all you’ve seen is the trailer, you’ll still understand the photos and memes.

Moral of the story is that this one movie was talked about continuously in a week by millions of people. If you brand doesn’t follow suite for millions of potential customers, then you’re missing out.

Remember the 80/20 rule of social media content? 80% of your posts should be entertaining or informational content that your audience will relate to. While Bird Box may not directly relate to your brand, contributing to the conversation about it will show that you are keeping up with the rest of the world.

Be where the hashtags are, and keep monitoring that Twitter feed before the next trend comes and goes!
