Copywriting 101- Five Techniques for Better Copywriting

By Meredith, Copywriter | June 3, 2019

Today, it seems like everyone is a copywriter. But let’s face it, with so many voices out there, it can be tough to be heard. Here are some basic tips on how to break through the clutter and add value to your brand.

Adapt to Your Audience
Really think about who you are talking to. Even as you type into a machine, remember you are always ultimately writing to a human being. Imagine a real person who might be interested in your product or service. How would you speak to him or her?

Modify Your Message
What are your brand’s USPs (Unique Selling Points)? Do your homework to identify the strengths of your product or service—before you start writing. Have a loose game plan and be strategic.

Find Your Voice
Consider your tone of voice. Is it more important for you to sound trustworthy or trendy or something totally different? If you are communicating the benefits of a banking service, your voice would be much different than if you were pitching a new soft drink.

Give Thought to Your Goals
What are you hoping to accomplish by asking someone to spend his or her valuable time reading or hearing your words? Do you want to create awareness or ask someone to share some information or close a sale? Regardless, think about what the next step should be for the person receiving your message. Your CTA (Call To Action) is an important part of your copywriting effort.

Review Your ROI
What’s working? What’s not? With so many ways to analyze content today, it’s easy to keep your finger on the pulse of its effectiveness. Be mindful and open to feedback of all kinds. Stick to your big picture objectives, but constantly reassess your means of achieving success. Take advantage of messaging opportunities to maximize your efforts for your return-on-investment.

Hopefully, this provides a little insight into the craft of copywriting. Of course, there are many more aspects of this ever-evolving writing discipline—including SEO, microcopy, storytelling and more. At BBG&G. we’re passionate about customizing verbal communication strategies to best serve our clients.
