Is TikTok the New Vine?

By Bianca, Account Coordinator | May 20, 2019

TikTok was one of the most downloaded apps of 2018. So what is it?

TikTok’s approach seems very similar to that of the now-defunct app, Vine. Vine was a video-sharing app that featured six-second videos. As an audience we tend to prefer short videos, as they are best suited to our fast-paced lifestyles. The co-founder of Vine, Dom Hofman, is currently working on a follow-up app called Byte. We will be curious to see if Byte lives up to Vine or the new arrival of TikTok.

TikTok is a mobile application that allows users to create and share short looping videos. It has captured the attention of Gen Z by featuring trendy and entertaining user-generated content. Thanks to its Musical.ly roots, music is an important feature that many users incorporate into their dancing or voice dubbing videos.

CringeWorthy or BingeWorthy?

Most people on the Internet would describe TikTok as cringeworthy.
The content can be so painfully embarrassing that viewers can’t help but watch. Viral “cringe” compilations are shared on social media, further encouraging young consumers to download the app.

Do brands have a place on TikTok?

With over 800 million daily active users, brands could potentially benefit from featuring their content on TikTok. However, the platform is still new. We suggest that brands targeting young audiences keep an eye on TikTok and create an account to stake their claim. Social media trends change rapidly; it’s important to stay one step ahead.

One way your brand could use TikTok is through Hashtag Challenges. These challenges promote brand awareness, generate engagement, and encourage collaboration with influencers. Brands implement a call to action when challenging users to create their own videos inspired by original branded content.  Take a look at Guess’s #InMyDenim hashtag challenge.
