Why SEO Matters Now, More Than Ever

We’re changing up the format of our monthly “Staff Spotlight,” and interviewing our Content Strategist, Traci Suppa, specifically on the timely topic of website SEO.

In the world of Covid-19, social distancing, and remote workforces, your website is going to need to work harder as the frontline and front door to your company.

That’s where SEO comes in. Here’s what Traci had to share:

Why is SEO so important now?

Your lead generation efforts no longer include trade shows, conferences, and local networking events. You can only go back to your email contact list so many times.

You need to make sure your website has the best chance of being seen by prospective clients, customers, and guests.

What SEO strategies do you recommend during this time?

Primarily, focus on maximizing organic search now. Consider pausing any paid SEM campaigns you have going on IF your product or service isn’t something your target market is interested in right now. Your conversion rates won’t show ROI. Save that budget…and hit SEM hard when things clear up.

SEO is a long game, so hopefully you have already been working on creating quality content on your site. Meaningful, useful content is the lynchpin of optimized SEO. It’s also important to have current, regularly updated content on your site, so now’s the time to add a blog post, or a page describing a new service you offer. At the very least, publish a letter to your customers explaining how your business is handling their business during this time.

Another relatively easy strategy is to audit your current content, and re-purpose what you can. That means, for example, taking a white paper and breaking the information up into three new blog posts. Take a “how-to” article, recipe, checklist, or other piece of content from your site and turn it into a social media post. If you have videos on your YouTube channel, create a video gallery on your site. Make shorter videos from them for social media.

Work on building up backlinks. Any link pointed to your site from another legitimate, authoritative site boosts your SEO. Now’s the time to make sure your company—complete with website address—is on your local chamber’s website. Same if you’re a member of a professional organization. All hotels, restaurants, and attractions should be listed on their local, regional, and possibly state tourism promotion sites.

What else should we think about?

SEO is multi-faceted. There isn’t one magic bullet, and especially now, organic search rates are just not going to be the same as they have been. We need realistic expectations, and just do what we can.

We’ve covered several other topics of improving SEO, so I’m recommending more reading on these topics:
